Newark Fairmount Promise Neighborhood (NFPN) is part of the federal Promise Neighborhoods program and is led by Rutgers University – Newark, the Urban League of Essex County and the United Way of Essex and West Hudson. The federal Promise Neighborhoods program, begun in 2010 by President Obama, builds on the success of the Harlem Children’s Zone, a program which has demonstrated results at every developmental age of a child, and currently has over 600 youth in college. The vision of the federal Promise Neighborhoods program is that all children and youth growing up in Promise Neighborhoods have access to great schools and strong systems of family and community support that will prepare them to attain an excellent education and successfully transition to college and a career. The purpose of Promise Neighborhoods is to significantly improve the educational and developmental outcomes of children and youth in our most distressed communities, and to transform those communities.
